Era el eterno actor secundario pero a diferencia de la mayoría, Stanton, participo en muchas películas de gran calidad y renombre. Su primer papel protagonista fue en 1984 en la película Paris, Texas, no fue hasta 2017 en Lucky, que obtuvo su último papel protagonista. Su filmografía es sorprendente ya no por la cantidad si no por la calidad de las producciones en las que participo.
